A new overnight downpour has raised the water level in Zhouqu's barrier lake, complicating rescuers' efforts to drain it. But it is no longer a threat to residents.
The water level in the barrier lake had receded but the overnight downpour raised the level again.
Rescuer, said, "We cleared the blockage in the gap repeatedly last night."
Chen lei, Minister of Water Resources, said, "A fresh surge of floodwater in the river has passed through the barrier lake because of the overnight downpour. Debris blocked the gaps at Wachangqiao bridge. Two gaps were opened by the armed police with heavy machinery. But they have to continue their work around the clock to make sure it stays unblocked."
Rescuer, said, "We are working at five places to make sure that we can lower the water level quickly."
After round the clock efforts, the water level has lowered by more than a meter Friday evening.
