Russia has defended its deployment of a sophisticated air defense system in Abkhazia, a breakaway region of Georgia. The Kremlin insists the move does not violate its international obligations.
A spokesman from Russia's Foreign Ministry said on Friday the S-300 air defense system is an integral part of military equipment deployed at the Russian military base in Abkhazia and it is intended solely for defensive purposes. He noted that the deployment would not destabilize the region.
On the same day, a Kremlin source told Russian media that the air defense system was actually deployed there two years ago.
