An oil field containing an estimated 1.8 billion barrels of crude oil has been found in Afghanistan. This is more than 10 times the size of all of the country's already discovered oil reserves.
The oil field was discovered by Afghan and international geologists between the country's northern provinces of Balkh and Sheberghan. Oil was first discovered in Afghanistan in 1959. A report by the U.S. Energy Department estimates that there are about one billion barrels of recoverable oil in the war torn country.
