Vice Premier Li Keqiang has urged food quality authorities to strengthen supervision in order to significantly improve the country's food safety.

Li Keqiang, who chairs a national food safety commission, called for efforts to optimize the supervision and accountability system for food safety. He said the efforts would be coordinated by local governments, food companies and other related departments.

Li Keqiang asked authorities to crackdown on unsafe food, ordering them to uncover and destroy tainted products, including milk powder. He says the government will hold related officials accountable, who repeatedly violated food safety and those who committed dereliction of duty in food safety supervision.

The Vice Premier added that a long-term mechanism must be formed to ensure the safety of food products, especially the dairy products and edible oil.
