Israel's defense minister says he has selected a new military commander. The new chief of staff will be Major General Yoav Galant, who led the Gaza offensive last year as head of the military's Southern Command.
Yoav Galant will replace the current chief, Lieutenant General Gabi Ashkenazi, early next year.
Defense Minister Ehud Barak announced the appointment on Sunday. It's expected to win formal government approval next week.
The change comes after a recent scandal in Israel's top military brass eroded public confidence in the army. The scandal focused on a leaked memo that appeared to spell out a scheme by Galant to smear his rivals for the job. Police now say the document is fake and are investigating.
The 52-year-old Galant began his military career as a commando and officer in the "Shayetet 13" naval special operations unit. This was the unit that raided the Gaza-bound aid flotilla in May.
