Former US President Carter arrives in Pyongyang

Former US President Jimmy Carter has arrived in Pyongyang aboard a civilian jet. His trip is reportedly aimed at securing the release of an imprisoned American.

Carter was greeted by the vice foreign minister of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and did not speak to the press at the airport.

Carter's trip is aimed at gaining the freedom of Aijalon Mahli Gomes. The 31-year old was detained by the DPRK in January for entering the country illegally. On April 6th, he was sentenced to eight years in prison and fined about 700,000 US dollars.

During a 1994 trip, Carter went to Pyongyang to meet with then DPRK leader Kim Il Sung and persuaded him to join talks regarding the country's nuclear program.
