Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan will face a leadership challenge next month at a Democratic Party room meeting.
Party powerbroker Ichiro Ozawa will challenge Kan, risking a bitter battle as the government struggles with a surging yen and a slowing economy. Analysts say it's unclear if many will back Ozawa because of his links to a political funding scandal and low popularity among voters. Unlike many other countries, where the Prime Minister is elected by its citizens, in Japan they are nominated by political parties and voted in by MP's and Senators. If successful, Ozawa will become Japan's sixth Prime Minister in just three years.
