Twelve militants have been killed after a shootout in the Russian republic of Chechenya.
Saturday's incident took place in the home village of Chechen president Ramzan Ka-dy-rov. He personally led the operation, and says the rebels were trying to attack the area.
Unidentified assailants opened fire at a traffic police post, when officers stopped their car for a check. Authorities say everyone killed had weapons in their hands.
Another exchange of fire occurred on Sunday in the North Caucasus republic of Dagestan. Attacks have spread this month from the regions bordering Chechenya, toward the Black Sea resort of Sochi.
