Despite weakening slightly, Hurricane Earl is still packing winds of almost 200 kilometers per hour as it heads toward the North Carolina coast.
Earl is now a Category 3 hurricane, and is expected to pass the US state as a powerful storm.
Tourists have largely left North Carolina's Outer Banks, but residents who have stayed behind say they are prepared to face down the storm.
State Governor Beverly Perdue says North Carolina is prepared for Earl and three counties have issued evacuation orders. It's now up to coastal citizens to get to a safe place as the storm arrives.
