French unions have launched a major strike over President Nicolas Sarkozy's plans to raise the retirement age from 60 to 62. The strike has caused headaches for travellers and commuters.

Civil aviation authorities have asked airlines to cut a quarter of flights at Paris' airports. Only two out of five high speed trains are scheduled to run, and traffic has slowed on Paris' subway and suburban transport lines. More than 200 street demonstrations are scheduled through out France during the one day protest. The French Democratic Labor Confederation union has threatened further industrial action if a deal is not struck.
