Ichiro Ozawa, the 68-year-old former secretary general of the DPJ, merged his Liberal Party with the DPJ in 2003, which by then was becoming a more credible force in politics.

Named DPJ leader in 2006, he led the party to a landslide victory in upper house elections in 2007.

In June, Ozawa stepped down as the DPJ's No. 2 along with the party leader Hatoyama, due to a political fund scandals. But he remains a widely influential figure within the ruling party.

In his political stance, Ozawa stresses that in order for Japan's economy to recover, the government must realize the policy advocated by the Japanese public, and implement the promises made by the DPJ in last year's house of representatives election.
