Japanese Prime Minister, Naoto Kan, has been re-elected as president of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan.

Kan defeated challenger Ichiro Ozawa, a veteran powerbroker with a 40-year political career.

The victory means Kan will continue as the country's prime minister, sparing the country another change in leadership.

Kan has promised to curb spending and cap borrowing. His challenges include balancing the strong yen with the fragile economic recovery, as well unifying his fractured party.
