Mexicans have celebrated the country's 200th anniversary of independence from Spain. The country's capital, Mexico City, was the scene of parades and a late night concert. Paul Crowe takes us there to experience the festivities.

Approximately 60,000 revellers gathered in Mexico City to take part in the grand parade.

People blew horns and danced alongside a parade of serpent floats, marched cacti and 13-foot-tall warrior marionettes and stayed late into the night at open-air concerts.

Some spectators wore sombreros and painted their faces in the red, white and green, colors of their national flag. The parade's route featured floats and dances performed by some of the country's top artists.

"We see it, we feel it, Mexico is present!"

Spectator Adriana Martinez said, "Today, we'll just enjoy the day. Tomorrow the 16th, God willing, we'll work harder to make the country better. God will decide what happens after Saturday, but today I am happy to be here like a good Mexican."

Another 25,000 people gathered at the main Zocalo plaza, to wait for President Felipe Calderon to give the cry of the call to arms," Viva Mexico", echoed by state governors and mayors in deserts, jungle towns and cities across the country.

Invasion, civil war and the current fight to subdue drug cartels have all been part of Mexico's two centuries of history.

The government's war against drug traffickers has cast a shadow over parts of the country, particularly the northern border with the United States, where 14 municipalities have had to call off celebrations due to safety concerns.
