Polish and Ukrainian leaders have joined victims' relatives to honor the thousands of Polish officers killed 70 years ago in the Katyn massacre.

Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski and Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov laid wreaths on Saturday at a former prison building in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. The city is close to the Russian border, where many of the officers were murdered. An estimated 22-thousand Polish officers were shot in the killings that began in April 1940.

Some 400 relatives of the Polish victims joined the commemoration. The activities included visiting a cemetery where about 38-hundred of the victims are buried.

This April observed the 70th anniversary of the Katyn Massacre. Late Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his wife and dozens of other top Polish officials were killed in an air crash near Smolensk when heading to the commemoration of the tragedy.
