Britain's opposition Labour Party has elected young lawmaker Ed Miliband as its new leader. Ed defeated his older brother and former foreign secretary, David Miliband, in a cliffhanger vote.

Ed Miliband squeezed out his elder brother in a ballot of legislators, party activists and about 3 and a half million labour union members.

He got 50.65 percent of votes, to his brother's 49.35 percent, in a final round of voting.

Could the young new leader bring good change to the Labor Party?
Yes.
No.

Ann Black, Chair of Labour Party National Executive Committee, said, "I therefore declare Ed Miliband the winner and the leader of the Labour Party. On behalf of all the party I offer you my congratulations, our congratulations and our support."

David initially was the strong favorite in the election.

But the slightly more left-leaning Ed's campaign gradually built up steam.

In a victory speech to activists, Miliband pledged to change his party and restore the faith of the British public.

Ed Miliband, UK Labour Party Leader, said, "And my message to the country is this; I know we lost trust, I know we lost touch, I know we need to change. Today a new generation has taken charge of Labor, a new generation that understands the call of change."

Elected as the Labour MP for the northern English seat of Doncaster North in May 2005, Ed is less well known among the British public than his brother.

But support from Labour's biggest financial backers--the trade unions, helped him to secure the party leadership.

Ed succeeds former prime minister Gordon Brown who resigned after the party lost the May election, ending 13 years in power.
