US President Barack Obama is vowing to deepen relations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. He says the US has an enormous stake in the region and intends to play a leadership role in Asia.

US and ASEAN leaders met while also participating at the general debate of the UN General Assembly.

US President Barack Obama says America needs a partnership with Asian nations to meet economic challenges and problems concerning nuclear non-proliferation and climate change.

Barack Obama, US President, said, "That is why the United States has accepted ASEAN's invitation to join the East Asia Summit, which will help us meet regional and global challenges together and I look forward to attending the East Asia Summit in Jakarta next year."

ASEAN leaders say they appreciate the US's sustained engagement. The two sides welcome the idea of elevating the relationship to a "strategic level".

Nguyen Minh Triet, Vietnamese President, said, "Vietnam and ASEAN always support the deepening of relations between ASEAN and the US bilaterally and multi-nationally. We want to take our relations to the next level."

However, experts say although the two sides aim to elevate relations, the symbolism of the meeting outweighs its substance.

The content of the statement is more about goodwill commitment and general principles.

What's more, Indonesia, the largest country and economy within ASEAN, did not attend the meeting in New York. This indicates there is still much work to be done to align the US and ASEAN.
