Now let's look at the background to the West Bank settlements.

Some 300,000 Israelis live in more than 100 settlements in the West Bank. They have separate infrastructure from adjacent Palestinian areas, and are protected by the army.

Another 200,000 Israelis live in East Jerusalem, also captured in 1967, or in areas of the West Bank that Israel annexed to Jerusalem after the war.

Some 2.5 million Palestinians live in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Israel has annexed East Jerusalem as part of its capital in a move not recognized internationally. The Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of the state they intend to establish on the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

In their opinion, the settlement in the West Bank is the theft of their earth and resources.

On November 25th, last year, the Israeli government announced a 10- month moratorium on the building of new Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

It ends today, September 26th.

It's a very important day because it could affect the future of peace talks in the region.

Palestinians say if Israel begins its settlement building again ,they will refuse to take part in any further direct peace talks.
