Information about the Moon

10-01-2010 16:38 BJT Special Report: Chang’e 2- Journey to the Moon |

The Moon is the largest natural satellite in the solar system relative to the size of its planet. Its diameter is about three-and-a-half thousand kilometers.

The light areas we can see are called the Lunar Highlands, and the darker areas, Maria. The Maria are lower in altitude than the Highlands. The Maria isn't filled with water, but dark, solidified lava from earlier periods of Lunar volcanism. Both the Maria and Highlands have large craters from meteor impacts. Meteors can't burn up before reaching the moon because there's no friction in the atmosphere. All kinds of cosmo radiations can reach usually the moon without any obstacles.

The side of the Moon unseen from Earth is called the far side. On the moon, sound can't travel because the atmosphere is like a vacuum. Temperatures on the Moon vary from 150 degrees Celsius during the day to minus 180 degrees Celsius at night.
