Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich has praised the decision of the country's Constitutional court to grant him extra presidential powers.

Yanukovich indicated he would now take steps to mould a new constitution to fit the presidential republic model.

Ukraine's Constitutional Court upheld an appeal by Yanukovich's allies and overturned a 2004 law under which many presidential powers were devolved to parliament. The landmark ruling will allow Yanukovich to be able to choose his own government and rule in a presidential republic rather than in a parliamentary one.

Viktor Yanukovich, Ukrainian President, said, "The new reforms of the political system are an indivisible part of the reform path and will become an important step towards national concord. I support the idea of a referendum and also the idea of a national constitutional assembly as a tool to consolidate reforming the political system ."
