Premier Wen: China willing to be "good partner" of Greece

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has met with Greek President Karolos Papou-lias in Athens on his second day of an official visit to the country. The premier says China, is willing to be a good friend and partner of Greece forever.

During the meeting with the Greek president, Wen Jiabao said "the China-Greece friendship and cooperation have gone through tests, and are facing a bright future." He added that "China is willing to work towards common development."

The premier said he witnessed the Greek government and people's unremitting efforts in coping with the challenges of the international financial crisis. Wen also expressed his belief that Greece could overcome these temporary difficulties and attain new development.

Papoulias, for his part, said Greece admires China's achievements in economic and social development, and its positive role in promoting world peace and development.

The president expressed his gratitude to the Chinese government for its support during these tough times. He voiced his belief that bilateral friendly cooperation would expand into deeper and wider fields and benefit the two peoples.

Also on Sunday, Wen met Greek Parliament Speaker Philippos Petsalnikos and held talks with the leader of the Greek New Democracy party Antonis Samaras.

The Chinese Premier arrived in Athens Saturday on a three-day official visit to the European country, which is the first by a Chinese premier in 24 years.
