China, US hold military talks

Defense Ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, have gathered in Vietnam's capital, Hanoi, for the first ASEAN Ministers' Plus 8 Meeting. In conjunction to attending the meeting, Chinese Defense Minster Liang Guanglie held a discussion with his US counterpart Robert Gates.

Calling the military relations "an important part of bilateral ties", Liang Guanglie says China has been positive and sincere in developing military ties with the US.

Although the two countries are facing obstacles in expanding military talks, Liang says China expects the two to make joint efforts to gradually settle problems in bilateral military ties.

Officials say the meeting signals China's stance on military ties with the US that core interests outweigh friction.

Guan Youfei, deputy director of External Affairs Office, Defense Ministry, said, "It is essential the two countries respect and care for each other's core interests and major concerns. It is the premise for the two sides to further enhance their relationship. It's important both sides play down differences, decrease suspicion and misjudgment."

This is the highest-level contact between the two militaries since relations were put on ice following the Pentagon's decision to sell a 6.4-billion-US-dollar arms package to Taiwan early this year.

Liang Guanglie invited Gates to visit China next year in another step to bring the two nations' military ties back on track.

The two sides also face friction over the South China Sea issue. China claims the area is an inseparable part of its territory, the US is persisting for joint development by countries in the region.

Despite the heightened tensions on the high seas in the region, defense chiefs from 10 ASEAN member countries and eight dialogue partners including China and the US will be discussing regional security issues. The two-day meeting is scheduled to open Tuesday, following separate talks between participating countries.
