China urges Japan to properly handle sensitive issues

10-12-2010 09:17 BJT

Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie and his Japanese counterpart Toshimi Kitazawa held a brief discussion. This is the first ministerial-level talks since a one-month stand-off between the two countries after Japan's detention of a Chinese fishing boat captain. Peter Koveos brings us further details.

The two defense chiefs held a short conversation during the Defense Ministers' Meeting.

Liang says China hopes Japan can handle the sensitive issue in an effort to get the relationship back on track.

He also says the Chinese government stands for promoting mutual understanding through dialogue and overcoming differences through consultation.

Calling China and Japan "friendly neighbors", Kitazawa says both sides should calmly and properly handle the existing problems and strengthen exchanges in all areas.

China-Japan relations strained after Japan detained the captain of a Chinese fishing boat near the disputed Diaoyu Islands.

China summoned Japan's ambassador to China several times to express its objection to the detention of the captain. Despite China's protest, a local Japanese court ruled he be detained for ten-days. This further escalated tensions between the two sides.

As its response to Japan's move, China postponed talks to jointly develop the East China Sea. China also suspended several economic cooperation programs and high-level talks with Japan. The crew of the vessel and the captain have been subsequently released.

Following an earlier meeting between Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Japanese Prime Minister Nato Kan at the UN General Assembly, the one-month diplomatic row between the two sides finally shows signs of easing.
