Defense Minister Liang Guanglie has attended the first ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting Plus, or ADMM-Plus. He made use of the chance to strengthen regional peace and stability by delivering a speech and holding talks.

The conference brings together officials from 10 ASEAN member countries and eight dialogue partners -- which includes the US and China. Liang is emphasizing China's defense development is not aimed at challenging or threatening anyone, but to ensure its own security and promote international and regional peace and stability. He also says the security situation in the Asia-Pacific remains generally stable but the region is still confronted with many traditional security challenges.

The region is also prone to natural disasters like tsunamis, earthquakes, typhoons and floods, which pose grave challenges to regional security. He urges the region to promote mutual understanding and trust, establish a reasonable security mechanism and cement it in a practical and steady manner.
