NATO secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have met to discuss the upcoming NATO summit in Lisbon next month.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has accepted an invitation to attend the meeting in the Portuguese capital.

Merkel commended Russia's new openness in discussing the Europe-based missile defense system, saying it was a good signal. Commenting on previously frosty relations between NATO and Moscow, Rasmussen said relations had thawed.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, NATO secretary general, said, "These relations have already improved substantially from where they were a year ago, and I hope to see how we can do more together on Afghanistan, on missile defence, on counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics, counter-piracy. There is a broad scope of areas where we could develop practical co-operation with Russia."
