Participants at the Shanghai World Expo have jointly issued the Shanghai Declaration. It recognizes the achievements of the Shanghai Expo, and expresses the shared aspirations of people around the world, to live better lives in better cities.
The Shanghai Declaration was delivered during the closing plenary of the Summit Forum.
It states that the pursuit of a better life for people, must be the foundation, and the driving force behind urban development.
It is therefore necessary to re-examine the relationship between people, cities and the planet.
The participants made seven joint pledges:
To Establish an Ecological Civilization Oriented toward the Future
To Pursue Inclusive and Balanced Growth
To Promote Scientific and Technological Innovation as a Path to Development
To Build a Smart and Accessible Information Society
To Foster an Open and Sharing Multicultural Society
To Build Friendly and Livable Communities
To Pursue Balanced Urban-Rural Development
The declaration also proposes that Oct. 31st, the closing day of the World Expo 2010, should be nominated as World Better Cities Day.
It's hoped this will be used to renew and drive forward ideas and practices presented during the Shanghai Expo.
