American cruise ship returns to San Diego after fire

An American cruise ship is returning to the city of San Diego, three days after it caught fire off the coast of Mexico.

The vessel, dubbed the "Carnival Splendor", is expected to dock midday local time on Thursday. Fire broke out in the engine room on Monday morning, about 300 kilometers south of San Diego.

The blaze damaged the ship's engines and cut electricity and communications. No one was injured in the fire. The Carnival Splendor is carrying 45-hundred people. The cruise line company has promised to refund all passengers' fares.
