Australians across the country have held a minute's silence to remember those who sacrificed their lives in war. At the National War Memorial in Canberra, the country's Governor-General Quentin Bryce laid a wreath. Quoting a World War One poet, she reminded Australians not to forget the war dead.

Quentin Bryce, Australian Governor-General, said, "Australians, as I lay a wreath for these men and all those who have fallen before them, I snatch two poppies winking in our midst. 'Behind my ear, I stick one through, one blood red poppy I give to you.'

She asked Australians to "remember and to hope." In Sydney, the city center came to a standstill as war veterans, their families and dignitaries gathered at the Cenotaph to commemorate the 92nd anniversary of the end of World War I. The names of 10 Australian soldiers killed in Afghanistan this year have been added to the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honor.
