Outside of China, the festival is better known as the Eid al-Adha. Muslims all over the world are celebrating the festival of sacrifice, one of the most important holidays in Islam.

At the crack of dawn, thousands of Muslims across India gathered to offer morning prayers for Eid al-Adha.

Sajitha Betti, a Malyalam film actress, also offered prayers. She said that everyone, irrespective of religion, should pray on this occasion for peace and harmony.

Film actress Sajitha Betti said, "I want to wish Bakr' Eid to everyone on this day. Everyone should pray for peace and harmony. Only when peace and love spread in society, only then Abraham's sacrifice will be meaningful."

Indonesian Muslims held a more solemn celebration, due to a string of recent disasters in the country - a devastating tsunami and the deadly eruption of Mount Merapi.

Indonesian Marsetio said, "As Muslims we have to share the love, especially since our nation is currently experiencing a variety of disasters. So we should pray together, God willing we will be able to face this calamity with great fortitude and devotion to God."

In Bangladesh, Muslims filled the streets of the capital city Dhaka to celebrate the Islamic holy day.

Dhaka resident Mohammad Zaman said, "Today is the holy Eid day, so I have come here and joined the Eid prayer session in Baitul Mukarram mosque. After going back home I will give a sacrifice in the name of Allah and my Prophet and will distribute the meat to the poor."

After prayers, animals were slaughtered to commemorate Abraham's devotion to God. The meat of slaughtered animals are shared with relatives, neighbors and the poor.
