Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao urges tiger conservation

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has attended the International Tiger Forum in St. Petersburg. He urges the international community to make joint efforts to protect endangered wild tigers on the planet.

Premier Wen said the first priority is to actively curb excessive human activities and strive for harmony between human development and ecological systems.

He called on forum participants to seek proper ways to sustain the livelihood of people living in tiger habitats in a way that supports tiger conservation.

Premier Wen Jiabao also proposed stepping up international cooperation to crack down on poaching and the illegal trade in tiger body parts.

On China's efforts to protect tiger, the premier said the country has already rolled out legislative, administrative and social measures for the purpose. These include constructing a network of conservation stations and banning the tiger bone trade.

Thanks to these efforts, China has seen remarkable recovery of its tiger habitats and a steady growth of its tiger population.

Premier Wen Jiabao promised the Chinese government would further consolidate tiger-conservation efforts to boost the size of of the country's tiger population.
