Chinese, Russian premiers pledge broader cooperation to enhance ties

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin have held talks in St. Petersburg to boost bilateral ties in various fields. It was the 15th regular meeting between the Chinese and Russian premiers.

Premier Wen Jiabao said China and Russia have deepened their political and strategic mutual trust, made progress in cooperation in trade, energy, finance and cultural fields, and strengthened strategic coordination.

He called on both sides to deepen energy cooperation, expand trade and investment,explore new areas of cooperation, normalize trade order and enhance people-to-people exchanges.

Wen added that China is willing to actively participate in the construction of Russia's infrastructure and special economic zones.

For his part, Putin agreed to push for stronger cooperation. He noted that Russia is willing to expand cooperation with China in the fields of machinery, electronics, and nuclear power.

He also said China's active participation is welcomed in Russia's privatization process and the construction of special economic zone. His country also hopes to strengthen cultural cooperation with China.

The two countries signed several cooperation agreements, covering trade and economy, energy, transporation, finance, and cultural exchanges.

Wen Jiabao will travel to Moscow on Wednesday to meet with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
