Hamas will respect outcome of referendum

12-02-2010 08:37 BJT

The Leader of the Hamas movement, Ismail Haneya, says the group will respect any Palestinian referendum on a peaceful settlement with Israel - even if it runs contrary to its own agenda.

Ismail Haneya, Hamas Leader, said, "We will accept the creation of a Palestinian statehood within the borders of lands that Israel occupied in 1967. Any agreement through a Palestinian national referendum, taken inside and outside of the Palestinian territories, will be respected by Hamas and the Palestinian government."

It's the first time Hamas has shown a willingness to compromise in the establishment of a Palestinian state. Hamas also says it will maintain an undeclared ceasefire in the Gaza Strip through 2011. Israel refused to recognize the Hamas-led government in Gaza, when it was elected in 2007, nevertheless Hamas has continued to rule the territory since.
