Yang, made the remarks at a forum on Asia Pacific issues in Beijing. The just concluded military exercises, between the US and South Korea, came after Seoul and Pyongyang traded artillery fire, near their disputed western maritime border, last week.

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said, "China advocates that the most pressing task regarding tensions on the Korean Peninsula is to prevent any escalation and to avoid any actions that would "inflame the situation. The parties concerned should keep calm and exercise restraint, and work to bring the situation back on to the track of dialogue and negotiation."
