The governor of the US State of New Mexico, Bill Richardson, says all sides should try to restart dialogue over current tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The unofficial envoy made the comments during a stopover in Beijing, following a trip to the DPRK. Ji Yi has the story.

Richardson spoke positively about his visit to the DPRK.

Richardson says the purpose of his visit was to try to defuse the current tense standoff on the Korean peninsula. During the trip, he says he urged the DPRK to show restraint, and not retaliate against South Korea during Monday's military drill.

Richardson’s visit is the first by a senior US official since the artillery shelling exchange on Yeongpyeong Island on November 23rd.

He arrived in Pyongyang Saturday, as South Korea and the DPRK appeared to be on the brink of conflict. It followed a UN Security Council emergency meeting, which failed to persuade South Korea from launching its live-fire drill.
