As tensions on the Korean Peninsula stopped escalating, China once again urges all parties engaged in the issue to keep calm, and work to peacefully resolve the problem through the six-party talks framework. Feng Jinchao has the details.

It has been reported the DPRK has told a visiting American politician that it would allow international inspectors to visit a newly unveiled uranium-enrichment facility. China welcomes the contact between the DPRK and the US, and hopes to resolve the problem peacefully.

Jiang Yu, Spokesperson of China Foreign Minister, said, "The DPRK has the right to peacefully use nuclear powers, but at the same time, it must abide by inspections of the IAEA. We hope the related problems could be solved within the framework of the six-party talks. We hope the contacts between the DPRK and the US could help restart the six-party talks."

The DPRK also announced Monday it would not "retaliate" against South Korea for conducting military exercises. Many see this as another gesture intended to calm tensions on the Korean Peninsula, at least for the time being.

"The current situation on the Korean Peninsula remains complicated and sensitive. We appeal for all parties engaged to keep calm and restraint, to take responsible attitude to prevent unfortunate incidents from happening. A peaceful and stable Korean Peninsula is the interests of all parties related." Jiang Yu said.

On Monday, South Korean troops conducted the new round of exercises. About 20 members of the US military participated in the drill. And in all, more than 28,000 US forces are based in South Korea.
