Strong earthquake hits southern Chile, no casualties

A strong earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale rocked the Araucania region, of southern Chile, on Sunday.

According to the US Geological Survey the earthquake occurred at 5:20pm local time. Its epicenter was nearly 17 kilometers deep, and was 70 kilometers north of Temuco city, which is nearly 600 kilometers south of the capital of Santiago.

According to early reports, the earthquake produced blackouts, sending hundreds fleeing for higher ground for fear it could generate a tsunami. Chilean navy officials say there is no threat of a tidal wave. There are no immediate reports of death or damage, but some cell-phone communications was lost following the tremor.
