The first day in the new year marked the long-waited arrival of Russian crude oil in China. With the connection of a new pipeline to PetroChina's Northeast Network, the country expects to receive 15 million tons of crude oil from Russia annually.

The Linyuan Oil Transfer Station in Daqing is the terminal of the Sino-Russian Crude Oil Pipeline. On the morning of January 1st, the station officially started to receive crude oil from Russia.

Jin Yan, Head of Daqing Linyuan Oil Transfer Station, said, "The changing numbers mean that the oil pipeline is fully charged, and the oil has arrived in the oil tank in Linyuan."

The new pipeline starts in the Russian town of Skovorodino, and enters China at Mohe County before continuing to Daqing, a petrochemical hub in northeastern China.

Some 927 kilometers of the pipeline are in China while 72 kilometers are in Russia.

Lin Bocheng, Project Manager of China National Petroleum Corporation, said, "We based the whole construction on the concept of what a scientific pipeline is. To ensure safe operation and daily maintenance, we employ a special operating company. In severe cold and sparsely-populated districts, we use helicopters for supervision."

The pipeline was completed last September, and is part of a loan-for-oil deal reached between China and Russia in February 2009. The pipeline is expected to send around 300,000 barrels of crude oil a day into China over the next two decades.
