US Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, has met with Israeli President Shimon Peres in Jerusalem. The pair discussed bilateral ties, and attempts to resume the stalled peace process.

Napolitano says the relationship between Israel and the US is strong and enduring.

The Secretary for Homeland Security is touring the middle east, meeting her counterparts across the region. One topic of discussion is how to restart peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

Israeli President Shimon Peres says all attempts to renew the stalled process are vital for the region.

Shimon Peres, Israeli President, said, "I do believe it's essential and important and urgent, because many of the countries that support terror are using the Israeli ticket as an excuse, as a cover. We should not give them this excuse"

Earlier, Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, proposed ongoing, face-to-face talks with the Palestinian president, until a peace settlement is reached.

But the Palestinians have shown little enthusiasm for Netanyahu's offer.

Their chief negotiator, Saeb Erekat, says the offer is meaningless.

Some 300-thousand Israeli settlers now live in the West Bank, in addition to 200-thousand living in east Jerusalem.

Erekat called on the Israeli leader to spell out a vision of peace, and commit to a near-complete withdrawal from both areas.
