Millions of people looking to start their new year's resolutions on a healthy note, might be pleased to hear about a diet that will let them shed pounds without going hungry.

The Dukan diet in UK has been dubbed the new ' Atkins' diet - because it lets dieters eat as much lean protein as they like without expanding their waist line. One of the most important rules is that one day a week must consist of a protein only diet.

In France where Pierre Dukan devised his diet over a decade ago, it's become known as protein Thursday and restaurants tailor their menus for it. The Dukan diet isn't as simple as it sounds. All dairy products need to be fat free, rich sauces, creams cakes, pastry or fruits aren't allowed.

Paula Rorie, Dukan Dieter, said, "I suppose I did miss fruit quite a lot because I know people sort of think of chocolates and stuff, but I loved fruit and fruit can make you put on a lot of weight because it's full of sugar."

Dukan admits that because protein isn't completely broken down into waste, it remains in the form of uric acid. But our kidneys can flush this out if we increase the amount of water we drink to three litres every day.

Gloria Parfitt, Director of Metabolic Balance UK, said, "Now when you are taking in too many proteins all at once, the body can acidify, it can produce more acid and in turn this can have a detrimental effect on your bone density, your digestion."

Dukan admits the diet is not suitable for vegetarians who need to eat every variety to ensure they get all the crucial amino acids. Furthermore, it's not simple enough to follow on you own. It requires laboratory tests as well as expert supervision over three months.
