More than 12,000 German conscripts have started service as members of the last group obligated to enlist for six months in the country's military.

Beginning in July, the national army will end conscription, and trim down from 250,000 troops, to a volunteer force of 185,000. The new soldiers were seen registering for duty on Monday in the cities of Eschweiler and Nuremberg. This reform is the most significant since Germany's modern army was founded in 1955, after a decade of complete disarmament, following the country's defeat in World War Two. The Parliamentary Commissioner for the Armed Forces says the change isn't part of an austerity program. He adds that, due to the overhaul, the military will be better geared to meet post-Cold War threats.
