A surging river in the southern Australian state of Victoria, has strained a levee that is supposed to be protecting people's homes from muddy waters.

Following weeks of flooding in northeastern Queensland, walls of water, kilometers in width, are now surging across swaths of northern and western Victoria.

Seventy-two towns have already been affected by rising waters, with over 1,700 properties flooded.

In the town of Kerang, floodwaters are at the highest in more than 100 years.

Up to 1,500 homes could be inundated if the levee holding back the water from the swollen Lodden River gives way.

It is holding firm so far but the high water levels are predicted to last for several days more.

Tim Wiebusch, Victoria State Emergency Service, said, "Water levels are likely to remain at this high level in the top end of the state for quite some time, and so we are likely to see this flood emergency continuing for at least another seven to 10 days."

Dimboola, in the state's northwest, is another community under threat and residents were asked to evacuate as a river that runs through the town surged higher.

Meanwhile the Australian government says the Queensland floods could prove to be the most expensive natural disaster in the country's history with estimates of 5 billion US dollars worth of damage before

muddy waters swamped Brisbane last week.
