Russia plans to send a delegation to visit islands disputed with Japan. The Minister of Regional Development of the Russian Federation, Viktor Basargin, will lead the delegation.

The team will visit Kunashiri Island on Monday, and then Etorofu Island on Tuesday. They will inspect the ports, airports, and the electricity infrastructure of the two islands.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev was the first leader from the country to travel to any of the four disputed islands last November.

Since his visit, a number of senior Russian leaders have also visited the islands, which are called the Southern Kurils in Russia and the Northern Territories in Japan.

According to Japanese media, the Russian delegation's visit is a sign that Russia is planning to embark on exploration of the region. The islands were occupied by Soviet troops in 1945 and are currently under Russian control.
