Temperatures are forecast to rise in China over the next three days, but while there may be relief from the cold, no rain or snow is set to fall, meaning no end to the severe drought in northern parts of the country.

It is now nearly 100 days since rain fell on Beijing, the longest such stretch since 1951, while North China's wheat-growing regions have received little rainfall since October. The national weather centre has urged local governments to take immediate measures to grapple with the worsening drought situation.

As of Jan. 28th, in excess of five million hectares of crops had been damaged by the dry conditions, while more than 2 million people were faced with shortages of drinking water.

Authorities in the regions affected have been told they need to monitor drought conditions, speed up the building of water projects, increase reserve materials and grant subsidies to the drought-stricken population.

Shandong Province,is one of China's key wheat-growing regions and locals say they are suffering from the lack of rain.

Zhu Fufa, Head of Wumiaozi Village, Shandong province, said, "The village has a farmland of 60 hectares, three quarters of which is growing wheat. The wheat is suffering from the drought severely."

Since it began last Autumn, 10 million people have been assigned to fight the drought using 2 million sets of drought-fighting machinery to draw 8 billion cubic meters of water, to in turn to irrigate more than seven million hectares of crops.
