US President Barack Obama is calling on governments in the Middle East to avoid crackdowns on pro-democracy supporters.

At a Tuesday news conference, the American leader said the world is changing, and with advances in communication, it's more true than ever that officials must understand that they operate with the consent of the people.

Barack Obama, US President, said, "My belief is that, as a consequence of what's happening in Tunisia and Egypt, governments in that region are starting to understand this, and my hope is that they can operate in a way that is responsive to this hunger for change, but always do so in a way that doesn't lead to violence."

Obama also slammed Iran for what he called its harsh treatment of anti-government protesters. He added that real change is going to happen, as people come together and apply moral force to various situations.
