South Korean and US forces are set to stage their annual military exercises later this month, in the latest show of force by the two allies.

South Korean and US Combined Forces Command say the "Key Resolve and Foal Eagle" drills are scheduled from February 28th to March 10th.

Officials stress the exercises are aimed at enhancing defense against "any potential contingency that could arise." The drills will involve field training maneuvers centering on ground, air, naval, expeditionary, and special operation forces.

Nearly 13-thousand US troops and 200-thousand South Korean soldiers will be mobilized, along with an American aircraft carrier.

The Command says it has informed the DPRK of the exercises, adding that the drills will be "entirely defensive in nature." The DPRK repeatedly condemns the annual operations as preparation for war.
