Two Iranian naval ships, whose passage through the Suez Canal last month provoked an angry response from Israel, have returned via the canal to the Red Sea.

The ships travelled to Syria and in doing so became the first Iranian navy vessels to pass through the famous waterway in 30 years.

Egypt approved the two warships' requests to go through the Canal after earlier rejecting their passage.

The deployment coincided with the political turmoil in Egypt and the presence of Iranian ships so close to Israel's territory led politicians in the Jewish state to call the move a provocation.

Iran said the ships were not performing any military exercises, but were on a routine visit.
