The Year of the Iron Rabbit is now underway. This is a major carnival for China's 5 million Tibetans, with celebrations lasting more than two weeks.

Revelers observe the Losar, or "Ghost Exorcising Festival," by setting off firecrackers, and hoisting prayer flags to scare away evil spirits.

They also prepare traditional Tibetan and Han food, in addition to performing Buddhist rituals. The festival, which falls on the 29th day of the last month of the year on the Tibetan calendar, features family reunions, along with pyrotechnic displays and torch lighting sessions. It is similar to Spring Festival Eve in many ways.

The 11th Pan-chen Lama extended greetings to all Tibetans as the holiday approached. In the next two weeks, revelers are expected to continue their celebrations by exchanging New Year greetings, worshipping gods, and racing horses.
