Germany's coalition government has suspended an agreement, prolonging the life of the nation's nuclear power plants. Chancellor Angela Merkel announced the decision in Berlin on Monday.

Angela Merkel, Germany Chancellor, said, "We know how safe Germany's nuclear power plants are. But it is also true that we cannot yet ignore the importance of nuclear energy as a bridging technology, if we want to continue to cover our own energy consumption as Europe's largest economy and if we want to respect climate protection."

Merkel also announced that Germany will close its two oldest nuclear plants this year, which have been running since 1975 and 1976.

The government will run security tests on Germany's 17 nuclear power stations before making any further decision later this year.

Merkel's coalition agreed to extend the life of Germany's aging nuclear plants beyond their original planned closure dates last year. But with Japanese engineers trying to avoid a meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear complex, opposition against the plan has strengthened.
