Laurent Gbagbo's 10-year grip on power in Cote D'ivoire seems to be in its final hours. Fighters loyal to the man recognised internationally as the president elect have surrounded Gbagbo's private residence and the country's presidential palace.

On Saturday morning, gun fire could be heard throughout Abidjan, the country's main commercial centre. Nearly 80 percent of the country and now large swaths of its largest city are controlled by an armed group fighting to install Alassane Ouattara. Incumbent President Gbagbo delayed last year's November election by five years, and then refused to step down when results showed he had lost the vote last year.

Ouattara's victory, winning 54 percent of the vote was recognized first by the Cote d'Ivoire's electoral commission, then by the United States and the wider international community.
