Maps make dynamic switch to 3D

04-02-2011 18:57 BJT

With the advent of new technologies, those old Ordinance survey maps cluttering your draw are beginning to look a little old, if not flat. Sat nav technology has been around and used by drivers all over the world for a number of years now, but a company from Sweden is hoping to revolutionize the way you stop getting lost.

A Glorious Spring day and a flight over the houses of Parliament, Big Ben and the River Thames. It's London, but not quite how you imagined it. This is a computer generated 3D version of the United Kingdoms capital.

Behind a myriad of Pixels, a team of software engineers are putting the finishing touches to their latest creation.

Cutting edge technology is often the preserve of Militaries. It's how the Internet came about and also how C3 Technologies got their hands on the former classified technology.

Ludvig Emgard, C3 Product Manager said "Maps by definition are a representation usually of a flat surface of the whole or a part of an area. The system differs from other 3D map makers because it relies on calibrated cameras attached to planes. The photos are then collected and the angles of each picture calculated. The benefit is that C3's Models cover a larger radius equaling a more accurate perspective in 3D on city suburbs. However there is one small problem holding the technology back - 2D screens."

Ludvig Emgard said "The new product has been called Google earth on Steroids and that it'll knock your socks off by some online technology bloggers. It could radically change the way you get around, the only thing it wont do is teach you to read maps or give you a sense of direction."
