Video: Abbas seeks reconciliation with Hamas

04-07-2011 08:57 BJT

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has travelled to Cairo for the first time since the fall of longtime Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in February. Abbas's visit, is aimed to seek a restart, of reconciliation processes between his Fatah movement and Hamas, which rules the Gaza strip.

During the visit, Abbas met with the Secretary General, of the Arab League, Amr Moussa. Moussa will step down from his position, and... has expressed his intentions to run for President, in Egypt's elections this autumn. Abbas, talked about seeking reconciliation between feuding Palestinian factions, which have descended into open warfare resulting in a political division between the West Bank and Gaza. Moussa said that he supports the initiative.

He said, "The Arab League is ready to put forward anything that will help, because we want reconciliation immediately. We do not see a single reason to continue the dispute or clashes or division. And frankly, as I have reminded all of the parties before, reconciliation is the basis and all of the other issues we see as pleas delay the reconciliation. "
